I realized the true power of art the moment I saw a woman in her 70s who had never painted before break down in tears in front of a canvas. I can still hear her voice muttering, "I never thought I could do this..." I had a vague idea to teach someone the skills I learned as an art student.

When I signed up to volunteer for a senior art class at a local welfare center, I thought I was just going to be teaching people how to draw.

But from the first class, it was a completely different world: the seniors wanted to tell their stories through art rather than technique, and I was at a loss as to how to engage with them, so I started studying art therapy and community art in earnest.

After applying this framework, I saw amazing changes: people who initially said "I can't draw" gradually found their own colors, and even more touching was the way the elderly encouraged and advised each other's work.

Six months later, we held a small exhibition, and it was so gratifying to see families come up to us and say, "I didn't know my grandmother had this talent." Volunteering in the arts is not just about sharing talents, it's about discovering new possibilities in each other.
