Visa’s AI Agents Revolutionize E-Commerce

Visa has unveiled its new platform, 'Visa Intelligent Commerce,' at the recent 'Product Drop 2025' event. This platform is designed to allow AI agent software to find and purchase items on behalf of users. Visa's CEO Ryan McInerney and Chief Product Officer Jack Forestell introduced this initiative as a new way to buy with AI in a secure and trusted manner. The goal of the platform is to bridge the gap from discovery to purchase.

Visa's initiative is a developer platform and partner program that enables AI-driven buying, introducing five APIs. These APIs include tokenization, authentication, personalization data, payment instructions, and payment signals, allowing AI agents to transact as securely as human shoppers. Visa also announced an agent onboarding framework to vet and certify AI agents before they access the network.

Visa is collaborating with OpenAI to set agentic commerce standards and enable use cases on OpenAI's platforms. They are also working with Stripe to adopt Visa's solution and drive agent-based payments. Perplexity AI is integrating Visa's personalization APIs to enhance shopping recommendations, while Ramp is exploring B2B agent use cases.

Visa's new APIs are designed to give AI agents the same capabilities as human users in e-commerce. Services like AI-ready cards, personalization, payment instructions, and payment signals ensure that AI agents can transact under explicit user consent. These services protect user data and ensure transaction security.
