Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw Discusses AI Usage
Union Minister Ashwini Vaishnaw stated his preference for independent thinking over relying on AI, during his speech at the NDTV World Summit. He clarified his stance on not extensively using AI in his work.
The Minister remarked, 'I like to think, don’t have a problem with attention span,' when asked about using large language models like Grok or Gemini. He expressed a preference for using his own intellect.
However, he confirmed an upcoming shift with the launch of Bengaluru-based start-up Sarvam's AI Model, expected between December and January, stating, 'I'll start using Sarvam.'
He assessed India's digital future, highlighting advancements in semiconductor design, AI infrastructure, and resource self-reliance.
On the infrastructure front, the Minister noted a significant breakthrough in semiconductor manufacturing capabilities. 'We have started designing two nanometer chips in India,' he stated, describing these as 'the smallest, most complex' components. This achievement aligns with the nation’s vision for 'Aatmanirbhar' technology.
The push for AI compute infrastructure was emphasized as a central theme, with 'compute facilities being a key facet of India’s AI journey.' The government is 'inviting large players to set up compute facilities in India' and confirmed that 'Meta is working on investment for compute facility in India.'
He also mentioned the plan for a Google AI Hub in Visakhapatnam, stating it would be 'very good for our country.' The Minister explained the necessity of this investment, emphasizing that 'getting computer facilities in our country is very important for us. Once we have them, the ability to do good research and develop AI applications will significantly increase.'
