OpenAI has announced that its subscription service, ChatGPT Go, will be available for free to all users in India for a 12-month period starting November 4, 2025. This offer extends to existing subscribers, who will receive complimentary access for the same duration. ChatGPT Go, initially launched in India in August at Rs 399 per month, provides users with increased message limits and expanded access to GPT-5. However, the duration of this promotion remains unspecified.

Nick Turley, Vice President and Head of ChatGPT at OpenAI, stated that the free availability of ChatGPT Go is intended to facilitate easier access to advanced AI for more people across India, coinciding with the company's first DevDay Exchange event in the country. The initiative reflects the inspiring adoption and creativity observed among Indian users since the service's launch.

The free rollout aligns with OpenAI's inaugural DevDay Exchange event in Bengaluru, aimed at engaging Indian developers and creators. This move appears to be part of OpenAI's strategy to expand access to its generative AI tools in one of its fastest-growing markets.

ChatGPT Go is a low-cost subscription plan designed by OpenAI to make its flagship GPT-5 model more accessible. The plan includes all features of the free tier, along with extended access to GPT-5, image generation, file uploads, and advanced data analysis through Python tools. It also supports features like projects, tasks, and custom GPTs for workflow management.

India has rapidly become a testing ground for major technology companies offering free access to advanced AI tools. In July 2025, Google announced a 12-month complimentary Gemini AI Pro subscription for eligible college students aged 18 and above. Such free AI rollouts highlight a broader strategy to leverage India's vast digital population for building user loyalty and expanding user bases.

For OpenAI, making ChatGPT free for all Indian users is a strategic move aimed at building long-term engagement and data depth in one of its fastest-growing markets. By onboarding millions of users to its paid-tier experience, OpenAI can strengthen usage habits, familiarize people with GPT-5's capabilities, and gather more data on real-world interactions.
