OpenAI and Anthropic Reveal AI Usage Patterns
OpenAI and Anthropic have released comprehensive studies this week detailing how people utilize AI technologies. The findings highlight distinct usage patterns: ChatGPT is primarily used for augmentation, whereas Claude is more focused on automation.
According to OpenAI's study, ChatGPT is most frequently employed for writing, editing, summarization, and brainstorming. It is utilized by students, marketers, and knowledge workers for drafting essays, preparing reports, or generating campaign ideas. Educators use ChatGPT for quizzes, tutoring, and simplifying complex topics.
OpenAI categorized the data into three segments. 'Doing' conversations are aimed at delivering output that can be integrated into production processes. 'Asking' chats support decision-making without directly producing output. 'Expressing' covers other use cases. As of late June, OpenAI's study indicated a higher prevalence of Asking conversations.
Anthropic's study found that Claude is more heavily used in software development and enterprise automation. Coding and other math-based tasks account for over a third of its usage. Companies integrate Claude into workflows for document processing, report generation, and bulk coding. This was the third study released by Anthropic, marking the first instance where automation usage surpassed augmentation.
Currently, ChatGPT excels in consumer productivity, where users collaborate iteratively. Claude focuses on workplace efficiency, with some enterprises increasingly delegating entire tasks. In the future, companies may use ChatGPT for communication and creativity, and Claude for structured enterprise-scale execution.
