One in Five Teens Report AI Chatbot Relationships

Recent studies reveal that high school students and adults are increasingly engaging in romantic relationships with AI chatbots. While not a new phenomenon, the frequency of these interactions is on the rise.

A survey by the Center for Democracy and Technology found that one in five high school students admitted to having a romantic relationship with AI. Additionally, 46% of students knew someone who had engaged in such relationships.

AI chatbots, designed with human-like features and emotional intelligence, can evoke emotional responses in users, leading them to perceive the AI as having a distinct personality.

Tragically, two teenagers recently took their own lives after forming relationships with AI. In Florida, a mother has filed a lawsuit claiming an AI chatbot was responsible for her son's death.

AI relationships continue to grow, with a study from MIT indicating that 1% of young Americans already have AI friendships. Furthermore, 7% believe AI could replace romantic companionship.

As AI technology advances, countries worldwide are introducing legislation to regulate its use. The EU, for example, has banned AI for emotional recognition and social scoring.
