Most Popular AI App and Its Surprising Runner-Up

Consumer generative AI products like OpenAI's ChatGPT and Google's Gemini are continually transforming digital lives. These web products and mobile apps are making significant impacts.

Venture capital firm Andreessen Horowitz (a16z) published a study tracking the most popular generative AI apps and their uses. ChatGPT and Gemini lead in unique monthly web visits and mobile active users. The list indicates shifts in global AI power dynamics and consumer platform preferences.

Following ChatGPT and Gemini, Deepseek, Grok, Character AI, Perplexity, and Claude rank high in web traffic. AI Gallery, Doubao, Microsoft Edge, Remini, and Baidu AI Search are top mobile AI apps.

Canva is absent from the list due to its non-native AI status despite significant feature additions. The report categorizes consumer behavior into seven areas: general assistance, companionship, image generation, editing, voice generation, productivity tools, and model hosting.

The study notes mobile app stores are curbing ChatGPT copycats, allowing new AI apps to gain popularity. Google features four products on the a16z list, including Gemini and Google AI Studio. Grok saw a 40% user increase post-Grok 4 release in July 2025.
