Monaco Adopts AI Translation in Evolving Communication Landscape

A newly developed AI machine translation module from Monaco now facilitates instant multilingual content publication on government websites. This initiative signifies Monaco's entry into a rapidly evolving technology sector projected to reach USD 55.6 billion by 2032.

The Principality's tourism website Visit Monaco and cultural events page culture.mc are among the government portals now offering content in up to ten languages, powered by InlexIA from Inforca. The first online translation tool, Babel Fish, was launched in 1997, followed by Google Translate in 2006, which now serves over 500 million users daily.

Recent advancements in neural networks have enhanced Google's translation capabilities and led to the development of new generative AI tools like OpenAI and Deepl, which have a superior understanding of context and meaning.

A survey in the UK revealed that 37% of translators have used generative AI in their work. While AI offers efficiency gains, it often requires human intervention to correct inaccuracies. As AI technology spreads, many translators report a shift in their roles to post-machine-translation editing.

Ethical concerns include the intellectual property issues of texts used to train AIs and the outsourcing of human jobs to machines. Government entities in Monaco report that translations using the tool are published up to ten times faster with reduced costs.

As AI translation becomes more sophisticated, questions remain about whether machines can fully replace human translators. Future InlexIA features in development include text tone adaptation and an automatic pre-publication review function.

Monaco's focus on digital transformation reinforces its position as a technological leader with both local and global impact.
