Microsoft is setting a new direction for personal computing as it prepares to phase out Windows 10, introducing a major AI upgrade to Windows 11. The company envisions every Windows 11 device becoming an 'AI PC,' powered by a more intuitive Copilot.
The update marks a significant shift from background automation to interactive engagement. Copilot is acquiring new capabilities—voice, vision, and autonomy—transforming everyday tasks into intelligent experiences. Microsoft's goal is to make PCs feel more like human collaborators rather than static machines.
With the new 'Hey Copilot' feature, users can activate the assistant hands-free, akin to Alexa or Siri. Upon command, a microphone icon and chime indicate Copilot's readiness to respond. Users can end sessions by saying 'Goodbye,' adding a natural touch to interactions. Microsoft reports that people engage twice as much when speaking to Copilot compared to typing.
Copilot is also gaining vision—the ability to 'see' on-screen content and assist users in real-time. Whether reviewing PowerPoint presentations, analyzing spreadsheet data, or editing photos, Copilot can interpret context and offer suggestions or step-by-step help. This functionality is integrated into the taskbar via a new 'Ask Copilot' button, providing one-click access to voice and vision capabilities.
Beyond conversation and perception, Copilot is becoming action-oriented through a feature called Copilot Actions. This addition allows users to describe tasks in plain English, enabling Copilot to execute across desktop and web applications autonomously. From resizing images to sending emails and changing system settings, Copilot handles it all.
