iPhone Users Warned of Fake ‘Comet’ App
Perplexity AI CEO Aravind Srinivas has issued a warning to Apple iPhone users about a fake app on the App Store pretending to be Comet. Users are advised to avoid this app.
In a post on X (formerly Twitter), Srinivas stated, 'The Comet app currently on iOS App Store is fake and spam and not from Perplexity. You will directly hear from us when Comet iOS is ready for pre-registering and downloading.'
Searching for Comet browser on the App Store reveals listings such as 'Comet – Ai Agent Browser' and 'Cornet AI'. The latter is disguised as Comet and claims to be powered by Perplexity, but its authenticity is unknown.
Srinivas aims to protect iPhone users from deceptive apps as anticipation grows for Comet's official iOS launch. He advises users to wait for Perplexity's official announcement before downloading any app claiming to be Comet.
Comet is positioned as a competitor to Safari, with an iOS version in development. Despite Apple's WebKit engine requirement, Comet aims to offer AI-driven features for smarter browsing.
Comet's rapid growth has increased brand recognition but also attracted imitators, posing risks to user security and Perplexity's reputation. Srinivas assures users will be informed directly when the official iOS version is available.
Until then, users should avoid unverified Comet apps and stay updated through Perplexity's official channels. If a questionable app is installed, users should uninstall it and monitor for unusual activity.
