Google and Grok Compete with ChatGPT
Rivals to ChatGPT, such as Google's Gemini, xAI's Grok, and Meta AI, are closing in on the popular AI chatbot, according to a new report by venture firm Andreessen Horowitz. The report provides data spanning two and a half years on consumer AI product usage.
The report lists 14 companies as top AI products, including ChatGPT, Perplexity, Poe, and Character AI. These companies represent diverse uses of AI, such as general assistance, companionship, image and video editing, voice generation, productivity, and model hosting.
For the first time, Google added four entries to the list of top generative AI consumer web products: Gemini, AI Studio, NotebookLM, and Google Labs. These products now have separate domains, allowing for individual growth tracking.
The report notes that Meta AI and Grok are also pursuing the top AI app, ChatGPT. Grok ranked fourth on the web and 23rd on mobile, showing rapid growth from having no standalone app at the end of 2024 to over 20 million monthly active users now.
Chinese AI makers also feature prominently in the top 20 on the web, with companies like Quark, Doubao, and Kimi. These companies see 75% of their traffic originating from China.
