Git’s 20th Anniversary: Community Drives Future Innovations

Git Merge 2025 is set to celebrate Git's 20th anniversary by exploring its future directions. The event will highlight topics shaping Git's future, including performance improvements, new backends, and the impact of AI coding agents.

Since its first commit, Git has become the default version control system for projects ranging from weekend side projects to the largest monorepos globally. Git's evolution has not stopped at git init, with contributors annually enhancing its performance, UX, and interoperability, while new tools and use cases push it into new territories.

To commemorate two decades of Git, an interview with Linus Torvalds, the creator of Git and Linux, was conducted to discuss how Git has forever changed software development. The Git project continues to thrive more than 20 years after its initial commit, thanks to a community dedicated to better performance, new features, and a more user-friendly experience.

At Git Merge 2025, as AI-powered coding agents generate more code, new questions arise about how these agents should responsibly use Git. Scott Chacon, co-founder of GitHub and GitButler, will explore practical strategies for teaching AI agents good Git hygiene, including writing meaningful commit messages and managing changes effectively.
