Eufy Encourages Users to Stage Thefts for AI Training

Eufy, a division of Anker, conducted a campaign from December 18, 2024, to February 25, 2025, asking users to simulate thefts to train AI detection algorithms. Participants were instructed to pretend to steal packages and upload videos for a small payment.

The campaign involved uploading theft videos via a Google Form and receiving payments through PayPal. Eufy aimed to collect 20,000 clips of package thefts and car door-pulling scenarios, with over 120 users contributing to the creation of hundreds of thousands of training videos.

Previously, Eufy faced scrutiny for privacy issues when its encrypted cameras were found streaming unencrypted footage online in 2023. The current campaign has also raised concerns about transparency in data handling and storage practices.

After the campaign ended, Eufy transitioned users into a 'Video Donation Program,' featuring an 'Honor Wall' in the app to showcase top contributors. Some users submitted over 200,000 clips, receiving digital badges and small gifts, highlighting a new form of gig economy where users contribute to surveillance AI training.

This initiative reflects a shift in surveillance capitalism, where users contribute to building AI models from their daily lives for minimal compensation. The critical question is not the value of improved theft detection but understanding what surveillance companies are building with collected footage and their reluctance to disclose data practices.
