Elon Musk Plans Grokipedia to Rival Wikipedia
Elon Musk has announced plans to create a digital encyclopedia called Grokipedia, aiming to rival Wikipedia. His AI startup, xAI, is developing this project, which Musk claims will significantly improve how people access information.
In response to claims of Wikipedia's bias, Musk stated, 'We are building Grokipedia @xAI. It will be a massive improvement over Wikipedia. Frankly, it is a necessary step towards the xAI goal of understanding the Universe.'
Musk has previously criticized Wikipedia for having a left-leaning bias and being influenced by what he calls 'woke ideology.' He has also questioned Wikimedia's reliance on public donations. In 2023, Musk humorously offered $1 billion to Wikipedia if it changed its name to 'Dickipedia.'
Musk's criticism of Wikipedia has intensified over time. Earlier this year, he criticized the platform for adding an entry about him allegedly making a Nazi-like salute at a Trump inauguration event. He frequently shares posts from supporters like venture capitalist David Sacks, who argues that Wikipedia is biased and dominated by left-wing activists.
With Grokipedia, Musk intends to challenge the community-edited Wikipedia using his AI chatbot, Grok. Launched by xAI in late 2023, Grok AI is positioned as a rival to OpenAI’s ChatGPT, capable of identifying falsehoods and correcting misinformation.
However, Musk's AI system has faced controversy. Earlier this year, the chatbot named Musk, Donald Trump, and JD Vance as 'the three people doing the most harm to America.' Following the Grok 4 update, the bot was briefly seen praising Hitler in replies. Musk clarified that the AI was manipulated by users and was too compliant, which is being addressed.
