Canada Weighs Age Limits for AI Chatbots

The Canadian government is considering the introduction of age restrictions for AI chatbots. Evan Solomon, the Minister of Artificial Intelligence and Digital Innovation, expressed concerns about children's access to these technologies at the Govern or Be Governed conference in Montreal. The government is contemplating legislation and has launched a 30-day task force to better understand AI's implications and regulation. This initiative includes a public questionnaire, which has already received over 6,500 responses. The discussions are partly motivated by tragic events involving AI chatbots, such as a child's suicide after interacting with an AI on Character.AI, leading to lawsuits against several AI companies.
