At TechCrunch Disrupt 2025, Astro Teller announced a major shift in Alphabet X’s strategy, outlining plans to spin out ambitious moonshot projects as independent companies more frequently. He said the research division would remain collaborative with Alphabet but operate with greater autonomy outside direct corporate control.

At the center of this new framework is Series X Capital, a $500 million investment vehicle led by former YouTube executive and Facebook CFO Gideon Yu. Bloomberg first reported the fund’s existence last year. Legally restricted to backing companies spun out of Alphabet X, the fund positions Alphabet as a minority LP investor to keep capital outside the parent structure, unlike GV or CapitalG.

Teller said the move aims to improve both speed and strategic fit. While some projects still benefit from Alphabet’s infrastructure, many develop faster beyond corporate boundaries. The new approach, he added, seeks to “land just outside Alphabet” — maintaining cooperation without control.

The moonshot philosophy remains unchanged: targeting huge problems with transformative technologies that make those problems disappear. Projects are rapidly validated or shut down, with success rates near 2% considered a design feature rather than failure.

Alphabet X emphasizes detachment between individuals and ideas, prioritizing objective decision-making. Compensation mirrors Google’s structure, with no equity in early stages but proportional shares upon spin-out. Teller described this as “a chance to count cards for innovation.”

Previously, spin-outs required external investors to acquire at least 51% equity, creating bottlenecks. With Series X Capital now in place, investors familiar with X’s research culture can participate directly, streamlining transitions.

Market observers view this evolution as part of a broader trend in AI innovation, where foundational models push research toward more specialized and technically complex challenges. The newly unveiled construction platform “Anori,” which targets carbon and waste reduction in the built environment, aligns with Alphabet X’s mission to pursue ambitious yet deployable solutions.
