ChatGPT Usage Patterns Unveiled
New data from OpenAI reveals that most individuals use ChatGPT for inquiries and advice. Since November 2022, approximately 49% of requests to ChatGPT have been for seeking information.
The report by the National Bureau of Economic Research (NBER) and OpenAI is the largest of its kind, indicating that about 10% of the global population now utilizes this AI tool. While there has been a steady increase in work-related queries, over 70% of usage remains non-work related.
There has also been a demographic shift in AI tool users. Initially, AI adopters were predominantly male, with around 80% having typically masculine names shortly after ChatGPT's release. By June 2025, however, users with typically female names became more prevalent.
Anthropic AI also shared data on its Claude AI chatbot usage, showing a strong correlation between AI use and average incomes. Wealthier nations like Singapore and Canada lead in AI usage, while emerging economies like Indonesia, India, and Nigeria use Claude less frequently.
In the US, economic disparities were evident at the state level, with a 1% increase in state GDP correlating with a 1.8% rise in AI usage. Usage also reflected regional strengths; in California, Claude was used for IT issues, in Florida for financial services, and in Washington DC for document editing and career assistance.
