Anthropic Halts AI Services to Chinese-Owned Groups

Anthropic, an American AI company, has announced it will cease selling artificial intelligence services to groups majority owned by Chinese entities. This marks the first policy shift of its kind by a US-based AI firm. The San Francisco-based developer of Claude AI aims to limit Beijing's ability to leverage its technology for military and intelligence purposes, according to an executive briefing the Financial Times. The policy, effective immediately, could impact Chinese companies such as ByteDance, Tencent, and Alibaba. An Anthropic executive stated, 'We are taking action to close a loophole that allows Chinese companies to access frontier AI.' The policy will also apply to US adversaries like Russia, Iran, and North Korea.
