AWS Outage Disrupts Thousands of Websites and Apps

Amazon's cloud services unit AWS was in recovery mode on Monday following a widespread outage that affected thousands of websites and popular apps globally. This incident marked the largest internet disruption since last year's CrowdStrike malfunction, highlighting the vulnerability of interconnected technologies.

After approximately three hours of disruption, systems began to come back online by 6:00 a.m. ET, with AWS reporting 'significant signs of recovery' for impacted services. AWS stated that 'most requests should now be succeeding' in its latest update on the outage.

AWS provides on-demand computing power, data storage, and other digital services to companies, governments, and individuals. Disruptions to its servers can cause outages across websites and platforms that rely on its cloud infrastructure. AWS competes with Google and Microsoft's cloud services.

According to Downdetector, issues on some apps and websites, including Snapchat, Roblox, streaming site Max, and PayPal's Venmo, were easing. However, other services like Reddit and financial platform Chime remained affected.

The incident underscores how interconnected everyday digital services have become and their reliance on a few global cloud providers. While there is no indication of a cyberattack, the scale of the disruption has led to speculation, experts said.
