Selecting AI Chatbots to Guide EU Leadership

Politicians are increasingly turning to artificial intelligence tools for policy guidance. Which chatbot should European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen choose?

Globally, politicians and governments are adopting AI tools to address their challenges. Prime ministers and civil servants are experimenting with chatbots, while Brussels' Eurocrats have their own AI tool. Albania has even assigned an entire ministerial portfolio to AI.

What is the situation in the Brussels Berlaymont building, home to European Commission President Ursula von der Leyen's office? Does von der Leyen rely on chatbots for making difficult political and policy decisions, and if so, which ones should she consult?

Von der Leyen's office did not respond to POLITICO's inquiry about which chatbots she uses. Consequently, an experiment was conducted.

POLITICO asked three AI chatbots — U.S.-based OpenAI's ChatGPT, France's Mistral's Le Chat, and China's DeepSeek — to imagine themselves as top advisers to von der Leyen. They were tasked with providing concise, high-level advice on 13 of her toughest political and policy questions.

Now, it is up to the readers to decide which chatbot provides the best answers. Which chatbot should be von der Leyen's top adviser? Which chatbot should guide Europe?

The political or policy positions taken by the chatbots do not reflect the positions of the companies behind them.
