MPA Urges OpenAI to Address Sora 2 Copyright Concerns

The Motion Picture Association (MPA) has emphasized that OpenAI must recognize its responsibility in preventing copyright infringement, rather than placing the burden on content owners. This follows the release of OpenAI's latest AI-powered video generation tool, Sora 2, which has raised concerns regarding intellectual property rights.

As the industry faces rapid AI deployment and its potential impact on creative processes, OpenAI claims that Sora 2 can create highly realistic background soundscapes, speech, and sound effects. The MPA, a global advocate for the film, TV, and video industries, aims to protect its members' content and support innovative distribution models.

Charles Rivkin, chairman and CEO of the MPA, stated that since Sora 2's release, videos infringing on members' films, shows, and characters have spread across OpenAI's service and social media. He emphasized that while OpenAI plans to offer more control to rightsholders over character generation, it remains OpenAI's responsibility to prevent infringement on the Sora 2 platform.

Rivkin called for immediate and decisive action from OpenAI to address these issues, highlighting that well-established copyright laws protect creators' rights and are applicable in this context.
