Chetan Bhagat: AI Lacks Artistry, Cannot Replace Human Emotion

Renowned author Chetan Bhagat has dismissed concerns that Artificial Intelligence and AI-based language tools will impact the profession of writers, particularly in fiction. He stated that AI may possess skill but lacks the artistry required to infuse true emotion into writing, emphasizing that creativity derived from human experience remains irreplaceable.

Bhagat expressed these views during the launch of his latest book '12 Years: My Messed-Up Love Story' at a bookstore in Pune, where he was interviewed by political analyst Tehseen Poonawalla. When asked whether AI and AI-based language models would affect his profession, Bhagat asserted that storytelling rooted in human emotion cannot be replicated by machines.

He highlighted that authentic writing is grounded in lived experiences, noting that AI has not experienced heartbreak or personal trauma, unlike humans. Bhagat stressed that the essence of storytelling lies in human connection, challenging the notion that AI could rival creative writing.

He added that even if AI evolves to mimic emotional expression, it will still lack authenticity in the eyes of audiences. Bhagat maintained that creativity drawn from human experience will remain irreplaceable despite rapid advancements in AI.

In a message to aspiring writers, Bhagat emphasized that despite the presence of AI-based models, the ability to observe people, read and write, and maintain discipline and focus in writing will not change. His new book explores the complexities of relationships and is relatable to both Gen Z and millennial generations.
