Auto Model Selection Introduced in VS Code for Copilot Business and Enterprise

The auto model selection feature in Visual Studio Code is now available in public preview for GitHub Copilot Business and Enterprise plans. This feature allows Copilot to automatically choose a model for users.

The auto model selection optimizes for model availability, currently routing to models such as GPT-5, GPT-5 mini, GPT-4.1, Sonnet 4, and Sonnet 3.5, with more models expected soon.

Premium requests using auto are billed based on the selected model, limited to models with multipliers from 0x to 1x. All paid subscribers receive a 10% discount on the model multiplier when using auto.

Administrators can enable access to auto model selection for users in their organization by turning on the Editor preview features policy. Users can then select Auto in Copilot Chat within VS Code. More information is available in the documentation.
